Conor McGregor Defeats Eddie Alvarez To Take UFC 205 Lightweight Crown

Seriously epic.

Conor McGregor took the UFC 205 lightweight crown tonight after dispatching Eddie Alvarez in the second round at Madison Square Garden in New York in a dominating display.

The knock out came after a succession of punches, which were also put to good use in the first round.

McGregor, vying to win two weight divisions simultaneously, and attempting to emulate UFC legends BJ Penn and Randy Couture in doing so, stepped out, looked his usual inimitable self and dominated every second.

He already held the featherweight title after knocking out Jose Aldo after just 13 seconds and, after a lot of heated moments, media scrutiny and typical mind games, managed once more to talk the talk and walk the walk.

His post match interview was very frank, including him stating: "Where the fuck is my second belt."

He also said: "I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise... to absolutely nobody!"

The Crumlin born Irishman was, as expected, the instigator in the fighting, employing a lot of strikes as he won this historic fight.

In other fights, there were also victories for Raquel Pennington over Miesha Tate (who subsequently retired) by unanimous decision, and Yoel Romero defeated Chris Weidman in the third and final round.

In world title deciding fights, current champion Joanna Jedrzejcyzyk retained her belt over Karolina Kowalkiewicz, completely dominating the tie early on, having a slip up mid way but using her experience to get over the line. She won unanimously, 49-46 each.

Tyron Woodley managed to keep hold of his welterweight title too, seeing off fellow veteran challenger Stephen Thompson with a majority draw decision. The fourth round swung it, with Thompson getting pummelled but somehow surviving and even getting on top at the end of the round. Two judges scored them at 47 each, the third edging it for Woodley 48-47.

Right, it's all over and done with. Go to bed.
