Hats off to a Pennsylvania woman who saved the life of Libre, a Boston Terrier that was found emaciated and infested with maggots.

When the three-month-old pup was discovered he had rotting flesh, was infected with mange and could barely breath.

Libre was in such a bad state that a vet wanted to put him down but Janine Guido, who helped rescue the dog from breeders, stepped in to save him and become his new foster mum. And you should see him now! After just three weeks of around-the-clock care at the Dillsburg Veterinary Center, he looks like a completely different puppy.

On the night he was rescued, Janine wrote online: "At seven weeks old he has only ever experienced horror and neglect.

"And the only thing I want is for him to know that life can be good. It can be full of love. And affection."

But after a lot of love and affection, and dog doctors at Dillsburg Veterinary Centre working non-stop, Libre is close to being allowed home to his new owner.

"He's a lot of work, and a lot of us miss our lunches to care for him," Michelle Hall, a veterinarian at the centre, told USA Today.

"But he deserves only the best treatment. Had he not come in when he did, he probably wouldn't be with us anymore."

Libre was saved by a delivery truck driver who saw him a number of times over a two-month period at an Amish dog-breeding farm in Lancaster County.

More than 16,000 people have so far signed a Justice for Libre online petition at Change.org, which seeks to have the breeder criminally charged for allowing the dog to get into such a state.

"I catch myself dreaming of you running around someday," the pup's new foster mum wrote in a recent Facebook post.

"With a wagging tail. With a smile on your face. And with a light in your eyes."

Well done Janine and I hope little Libre gets well soon!
