A 33-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the possession of 9,000 indecent images of children, including some of the most 'extreme' kind and showing sexual activity with an animal.
David Carey, from Longenton, North Tyneside, is facing nine charges in relation to the photos.
He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He withheld his plea to one count of distributing an indecent image of a child, three of making an indecent image/pseudo-photograph of a child, three of possessing an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child, one of possessing an extreme pornographic image, which involved sexual activity with an animal, and one of possessing a prohibited image of a child, Chronicle Live reports.
The alleged offences happened between 1 November 2012 and 25 February 2016 at his home, the court heard.
Laura Lax, prosecuting, said the charges are related to photos and videos found on his phone, laptop and a memory stick. They are described as category A, the most serious, to category C, which is the least serious.
She said: "These charges are not suitable to be dealt with at this court. There's a number of charges. It's allegedly about 9,000 images and some are extreme. There's also a charge of distribution of a small amount of category A images.
"It's clearly beyond any potential sentencing powers of this court."
Carey has been released on conditional bail until his next court appearance on February 1.
