A stabbing attack in London has seen a 19-year-old man arrested after one woman was killed and five people were injured.

The violence occurred on Wednesday night at Russell Square in the centre of England's capital, and terrorism is being examined as a potential motive while mental health has also not been ruled out as a possible cause.

A woman in her sixties has died as a result of the attack after attempts to save her life at the scene failed. Five other people, including one woman and four men, have been injured.

Police arrested a teenage man as result of the attack after he was controlled by a Taser and he is now under guard in hospital.

Counter-terrorism officers have not ruled out the possibility that terrorism was a cause of the attack but they have also said mental health may have been a 'significant factor'.

Members of the public have been giving their accounts of what they have seen in the time after the attack at Russell Square.

"The area was taped off and there were loads of armed police and lots of cars, and a couple of ambulances," Paul Hutchinson told Sky News.

"The traffic was slow but moving. Only one part of the square was closed, the side with hotels and businesses."

Senior counter-terrorism officer Commander Mark Rowley has since confirmed that extra police will be on duty in London as a precaution on Thursday.

If you have any information regarding the attack, you can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
