Dog Almost Dies After Eating 206 Pebbles

The springer spaniel was rushed in for emergency surgery after an x-ray showed the stones in his stomach

An adorable pooch almost died after he decided to chow down on a bunch of pebbles - and when I say, 'a bunch', I'm talking more than 200 in a single sitting.

Springer spaniel Dilyn, who is 12, had to be rushed into surgery after his owners noticed he was unwell.

The family say they had taken the dog for a walk on the beach in Barmouth, South Wales, on 17 August when he decided to tuck into the small stones.

Realising their dog was unwell, the family took poor Dilyn to WIlliam's Veterinary Surgeon in Tywyn, where he was given an anaesthetic and vets checked him over.

After undergoing an x-ray his owners and the vets were shocked to find the sheer number of stones inside the dog's tum; with one vet saying it was 'unlikely' to have ever been seen by 'any other vet in the UK'.

Vet Amy O'Regan spent almost three painstaking hours removing the pebbles, counting up a total of 206.

Weirdly, Dilyn's owners say he has no history of chewing stones and they reckon he ate all of the rocks on the one occasion, while out for a walk as though he were taking part in some bizarre Dog v. Food challenge.

They have since started calling him The Terminator, for obvious reasons.

Hugh Williams, a partner at Williams Vets, said: "We've never had anything like this.

"We've had dogs swallowing stones before but usually one or two, three at a push - 206 is unheard of.

"You'd think as a 12-year-old he'd know better.

"We really thought the worst when we saw the X-ray - how are we going to get all these out?

"How much damage has already been done?

"But we're delighted he's made a full recovery, he's really very lucky to be alive."

Well, it's good to know little Dilyn is on the mend. Let's hope he sticks to more conventional doggy treats in the future, eh?
