A man has invited fellow dog owners to his whippet's final walk before being put down.

Mark Woods wants to make the sad occasion of 18-year-old Walnut's last stride a celebration by taking him for a stroll on Porth Beach in Newquay, his favourite beach.

Writing about the event called Walk with Walnut on Facebook, Mark wrote: "Sadly I am having to have Walnut euthanised on Saturday.

"So we will be having a last walk together on his beloved Porth Beach at 9.30am.

"I would love it if dog lovers/owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut on his favourite Porth Beach.

"He has had an incredible life and having reached the grand age of 18 is ready for his final sleep. Hope to see you on Saturday."

The post was shared hundreds of times by other Facebook users, with dog owners from across the country offering support.

The reaction has been both sombre and supportive. Charlotte Chapman wrote: "Best of luck on Walnut's final walk. What a send off and lovely, caring thing to do. Me and Beti (my lurcher), wish we could be there, too. Be strong and I am sure you will see Walnut again in some other realm on a beach catching squirrels."

While Kerry Hawkins said: "Such a beautiful thing to do, Walnut is a very lucky dog to have shared such a wonderful life with you...as I'm sure you feel as equally as lucky to have shared 18 years of your life with Walnut.

"May Walnut run freely over rainbow bridge and watch over you ....My thoughts are with you all on this celebration of Walnut's life."
