Miller and Carter slammed after manager is filmed asking customers for ID before buying food

Miller and Carter slammed after manager is filmed asking customers for ID before buying food

The chain has been criticised after the customer posted the exchange on TikTok

Popular steakhouse chain Miller & Carter has been criticised following a video that has been doing the rounds online.

The viral clip involves an exchange with the manager of the restaurant and some travellers that were trying to eat there.

The clip was shared on TikTok on Monday 22 April, through the account @gypsytravellerleague, with the customer filming the manager and his odd request.

Despite the text in the video stating that it happened in the chain in Harlow, this was corrected in the description as it was stated that this took place in their Epping branch.

With over 2.6 million views and over 4400 comments, the incident has sparked wild debate on social media over how odd the situation is, and who is in the right.

The video begins with the customer asking the manager, who was standing at the front desk, 'what do you need?' to which he replied 'ID'.

Shocked, the customer asked what it was for, to which the manager just said: "Just need some ID."

"For why, what's the reason. ID if I wanna get food?" The customer asked in disbelief.

The customer was told 'yes', before asking the manager if he was being serious, to which he nodded and said : "No problem, lads, You can phone the head office and they'll tell you."

Despite these strong claims from the manager, the customer persisted: "So [at] Miller & Carter, you have to have ID to serve you food,

"That's correct, yeah? What's your name?" He asked.

The manager said his name was Damien and he was indeed the manger, before walking off as he didn't want to be filmed any more.

When contacted for comment, Miller & Carter told LADbible that they are not able to provide a comment.

Users in the comment section of the video said that it may have been a safety precaution to stop dine and dashers.

"Probably because they’ve had so many people do runners," one commented.

Another said: "Having loads down by us doing a runner. Don’t blame them asking for ID".

But in contrast, a number of people highlighted that they've been to Miller & Carter branches, but have never been asked for ID.

"That is absolutely shocking!! I am horrified," one said.

Another commented: "Never been asked for ID before in any Miller and Carter we been in."

"Been to Miller and Carter never once have been id for food," said a third.

More people sided with the manager though, saying that they should make customers pay before serving food, similar to Wetherspoons and Nando's.

Another user commented: "Pay for the food when you order, solves it."

"Take payment at time of ordering the meals and drinks. PAYG system. Solved," said another.
