Prison Break is officially getting a reboot

Prison Break is officially getting a reboot

Get ready to go back to Fox River State Penitentiary, but not as you know it.

Prison Break had an incredible run when it aired on TV between 2005 to 2009.

There were 90 episodes created of the series and it was finally decided to put a pin in it after the fifth season in 2017.

However, it appears there is still some stories to tell from Fox River State Penitentiary.

Entertainment Weekly reports a Prison Break reboot is officially in the works at Hulu.

The streaming service has hired Mayans M.C. co-creator and showrunner Elgin James to lead the project.

However, don't expect to see the likes of Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows dominating the small screen.

The outlet claims this reboot 'will not follow the characters of the original saga but is set in the same world'.

So, same setting, completely new people.

The original series focused on Schofield (Wentworth Miller) deliberately committing armed robbery so that he could get inside Fox River State Penitentiary.

He wanted to be in prison so that he could rescue his brother, Burrows (Dominic Purcell), who had been sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit.

There have been whispers in Hollywood that the show was getting a sixth season, however it has yet to see the light of day.

Purcell revealed back in 2020 that work was underway to bring the show back.

In a cryptic post on his Instagram account, he wrote: "Rumor number 1. I'm old. Yes. I'm 50.....

"Rumor number 2. I'm bald. No I have a full head of hair; the people demand I shave it.

"Rumor number 3, Will season pb 6 happen. Yes.....

"Rumor number 4. Do I like humans? No. Not on mass. Definitely not."

It sent fans wild and everyone was excited that we would get another revival, even though the fifth instalment wasn't well received by some viewers.

It currently sits at 56 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and the critical consensus said: "Prison Break recaptures some of its old urgency in its return, but familiar faces and frenetic action aren't enough to make up for a plot that manages to bore while beggaring belief."

However, that's the last we've really heard of this mysterious sixth season.

Maybe this was what Purcell was referring to all along.

There's no word on when we can expect to see the rebooted Prison Break series back on our TVs, so stay tuned.
