Here's what Oppenheimer's cast looks like compared to the real people they played

Here's how the cast of the hit movie look alongside their real life counterparts

Warning! Some spoilers for Oppenheimer below!

It's pretty much impossible that you've made it this far without at least hearing about Oppenheimer, which has been a roaring success at the box office alongside the cinematic juggernaut that is Barbie.

Audiences are packing out cinemas to see both movies and Barbie appears to be a bit ahead in box office earnings while Oppenheimer has enjoyed slightly higher reviews from critics.

Really, both of these films are massively succeeding and there's plenty to be happy about for both movie crews.

The only dismayed viewers seem to be those who are getting their screenings cut short abruptly, which would be a shame for those who've parked themselves in their seat for three hours to watch the weighty historical epic about the 'father of the atomic bomb'.

Oppenheimer is aiming to show audiences just what happened with the man who ran the Manhattan Project and what happened to him after World War Two, and the resemblance between some of the actors and the people they played is uncanny.

Cillian Murphy - J. Robert Oppenheimer

The titular character of Oppenheimer, the man who led the development of the atomic bomb and was later targeted for his friendships with communists during the 'red scare'.

Cillian Murphy put a lot into his performance and it certainly shows on screen as he plays J. Robert Oppenheimer at various stages of his life from fresh faced young student to era defining scientist.

Robert Downey Jr - Lewis Strauss

One of the many A-list stars in Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr plays controversial American politician Lewis Strauss, who was head of the Atomic Energy Commission.

His rivalry with Oppenheimer is the focus of part of the film as the movie picks over their post-war disagreements.

Florence Pugh - Jean Tatlock

J. Robert Oppenheimer had a reputation as a womanizer and one of the several women in his life was Jean Tatlock.

Florence Pugh portrays the psychiatrist whose relationship with Oppenheimer lands him in trouble due to her communist beliefs.

Emily Blunt - Kitty Oppenheimer

You will not want to miss Emily Blunt's performance as Katherine 'Kitty' Oppenheimer, her performance is one of the finest among a star studded cast.

We don't wish to spoil too much about the movie so we'll leave it there.

Matt Damon - Leslie Groves

Taking on the serious role of Leslie Groves is Matt Damon, who plays the military officer put in charge of the Manhattan Project who ends up choosing Oppenheimer as the man to oversee development of the atomic bomb.

Before being put in charge of building the atomic bomb, he had also overseen the project to build The Pentagon.

Gary Oldman - President Harry S. Truman

Proving that he's quite the chameleon as an actor, Gary Oldman features in one scene in Oppenheimer as the president who decided to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

If you're at all familiar with the life of Oppenheimer, then you might be able to guess what his role in the movie is, and if not then you had better just watch it and find out yourself.

Rami Malek - David Hill

We'll keep shtum about the role Rami Malek's David Hill plays in Oppenheimer, but the real Hill was an experimental physicist during the time of the Manhattan Project.

He was one of 70 scientists who signed a letter to President Truman asking him not to use the atomic bomb as a weapon.

Josh Peck - Kenneth Bainbridge

Oppenheimer might have said 'now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds' after understanding the destructive power of the atomic bomb, but Kenneth Bainbridge said 'now we are all sons of b*****s', which Oppenheimer thought was the best thing anyone said in response to the bomb test.

In the movie he's played by Josh Peck (yes, that Josh).

Dylan Arnold - Frank Oppenheimer

Like his brother Robert, Frank Oppenheimer was a physicist and played a part in the Manhattan Project, though his involvement with communism placed him under great scrutiny in the US.

When he joined the project, he worked under Bainbridge, and now he appears under him in this list too.

Tom Conti - Albert Einstein

Here's someone who needs no introduction, pretty much everyone has heard of the man so smart that his name became a synonym for genius.

The legendary scientist knew Oppenheimer in real life and would occasionally offer him advice on the Manhattan Project, though he came to regret the terrible power of the atomic bomb.

Benny Safdie - Edward Teller

While Oppenheimer is about the 'father of the atomic bomb', it also features the 'father of the H-bomb' as well.

Edward Teller is one of many scientists who works with Oppenheimer on the Manhattan Project and his role in the future of nuclear weapons plays a part in the unfolding drama.

David Krumholtz - Isidor Isaac Rabi

Having worked on radar during the Second World War, Isidor Isaac Rabi was invited by Oppenheimer to join the Manhattan Project.

During the first atomic bomb test, he won the betting for how powerful the blast would be after arriving late and having to pick the only entry left to bet on.

Scientists had been betting on the power of the bomb, with best ranging from the bomb being a dud which wouldn't go off to a 45 kiloton blast.
