Host Alexander Armstrong Is The Answer On Pointless

It all got a bit meta on Pointless the other day.

It's not often the answer to your question is right in front of you, but for clever contestant Linda, it was.

She was asked to name an artist who featured in the top 40 biggest albums list of 2015 - of course a lot of famous names spring to mind, but that's not how Pointless works. Instead, you go for the most obscure answer. If you get a zero score, a correct answer that no one else has got, then it's "pointless," and you get an extra £250 in the jackpot. Nice!

She asked if she could name the quiz host as the answer. So polite - but maybe she was gauging his reaction.

If Alexander Armstrong knew it was correct - and not only just correct, but pointless - he didn't show it and played it cool: "I'd be very flattered... but I'd be very surprised."

The Pointless host realised a lifelong ambition when he released his debut album A Year of Songs. He used to be a choir boy and his album of classical songs reached number six in the albums charts in November 2015. Is there nothing that the BAFTA-winning actor, comedian, host and singer can't do?

Alexander was shocked when it was confirmed that his album was the 32nd highest selling in 2015. "That has taken the wind out of me," he went on to say. "I had no idea - I wouldn't have thought I was in the top 40. Maybe the top 70."

Anyway, Twitter was delighted that Alexander was the answer to a question, saying it was the best moment on the quiz and in 2017. Steady on, we're not three weeks into the New Year yet.

The host from Pointless' gameshow rival The Chase could also end up being a pointless answer. Bradley Walsh had a varied career before becoming a TV host; he was a professional football player for Brenton before going on to be an actor on Coronation Street and Law & Order: UK.
