Hollywood hard man Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson shocked fans this morning when he revealed that he was related to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The former WWE wrestler made the revelation during an interview with Good Morning Britain, saying the newly-elected leader of the Conservative Party was, in fact, his cousin.

Now, of course, he was joking, but after receiving a fair few messages from fans on Twitter, the Fast and Furious star quickly - and fairly awkwardly - backed out of the joke.

Speaking to reporter Ross King, the 47-year-old said: "He's family by the way, you don't know that, but now all of Britain knows. He's my cousin. It's like looking in the mirror, every time I see Boris."

In a - now deleted - tweet, Johnson repeated the joke, claiming the pair were 'twins'. However, he has since denied having any familial links with the Tory leader.

The Rock has since assured followers that they aren't 'related at all'. He said: "Well according to the people, maybe we're not related after all. Big mahalo to my people who I can always rely on to give me the real talk and swift perspective & education on the individual I did not know. Tequila on me, Britain."

The u-turn has been met with a mixed response. Some have praised the actor for deleting his tweet and going back on what he said.

Can you see the resemblance?

One person commented: "You're definitely not related. Admitting honest mistakes is definitely a million miles away from what the PM would of done in this scenario."

A second follower said: "Big respect for this tweet, you're a stand up guy, nothing like our current PM."

"Massive respect for this dude. When I saw the original tweet I couldn't believe you'd associate with him," added another.

But not everyone was so offended by the joke, with some urging people to just chill out.

Defending the comment, one fan said: "These sensitive jabronies losing their minds over some light banter with the host."

Backing the comments, another wrote: "Unless you know him personally don't listen to others opinions."
