A popular high school teacher who was battling with cancer has died just a few days after 400 of his students turned up outside his house to sing to him.

Ben Ellis was a Latin teacher at Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

Last year he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and his condition rapidly deteriorated.

A video emerged last week showing the moment when 400 students and staff surprised Ellis by turning up to his house to serenade him, showing just how much he meant to them.

Ben, perched by the window, joined in and struggled to hold back his tears of joy while his students sang the hymns up to his window.

However, yesterday morning the school announced that the much-adored Latin teacher had passed away just 10 days after the tribute.

Since then, many have paid their respects. Country music star Tim McGraw shared this post. McGraw also shared the original video that was viewed by millions worldwide.

In response to his share, Mr Ellis' father, Bob, thanked him and said: "Ben is my son. Through his ministry and teaching, he has positively touched countless hundreds of lives directly and many thousands indirectly."

The world has clearly lost an incredible man.
