When Surviving R Kelly came out last year, audiences were shocked by the allegations and the evidence that mounted against the singer.

Now, the network behind the documentary is producing a four-hour special on Jeffrey Epstein.

Lifetime has officially ordered the series and made the announcement at the Television Critics Association winter press tour at the weekend.

According to Variety, the special will air in the middle of this year.

A&E, Lifetime's parent company, released a statement, saying: "Lifetime expands its footprint in the investigative doc space with development on Surviving Jeffery Epstein, centring on the billionaire New York financier who is alleged to have used his connections to the rich and famous to shield his predatory behaviour with young girls.

"Accused of sex crimes with minors and trafficking, registered sex offender Epstein allegedly hid in plain sight while enablers protected him for over two decades, until his arrest by the FBI."

It will be directed by Anne Sundberg and Ricki Stern, while Shura Davidson and Gena McCarthy will be executive producers on the series.

Epstein was arrested in July last year after being accused of sex trafficking minors. A month later, as he was awaiting trial, he died in his prison cell and was ruled to have hanged himself.

But a recent poll has revealed almost half of all Americans don't believe Epstein killed himself.

According to the study by Insider, 45 percent of Americans believe that he was murdered, while only 16 percent of those asked believe that he died by suicide. It also states that 39 percent of US citizens aren't sure.

Insider puts forward various theories for the conspiracy picking up so much support.

The 'Jeffrey Epstein didn't kill himself' meme has no doubt brought the conspiracy to life, and it's been shared by a former Navy SEAL and other notable figures.

His connections with powerful people including Bill Gates, Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton - and of course, President Trump - have caused more doubt.

His death prevented the possibility of a trial and provoked significant anger among those who believed he should have to answer these allegations.

Two prison guards responsible for guarding Jeffrey Epstein before his death have been charged with falsifying prison records. According to the Associated Press, a grand jury indictment accused guards Toval Noel and Michael Thomas of neglecting their duties.

The indictment claims the guards failed to perform the required half-hourly checks on Epstein but fabricated log entries to indicate that they had done so.
