Since Disney announced its mega merger with Fox, fans have been worried about what lies in store for some of their favourite characters.

And because of the nature of the films, one of those most talked about has been Deadpool, with audiences concerned this could spell a watering down of the franchise's crass tone.

Well, we have good news: the film's co-writer Paul Wernick has said Marvel - which is owned by Disney - has promised to allow his team to continue making R-rated movies. The US' R-rating is also known as 'restricted', and means that viewers aged under 17 will require an accompanying parent or adult guardian in cinemas.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: "We're always in touch with Ryan [Reynolds, who plays Deadpool].

"I think the party line and truth is we're all still figuring it out. Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] a little bit as well and play in that sandbox.

Ryan Reynold's potty-mouthed take on the iconic superhero will continue, according to Marvel.

"Our feeling and Ryan's feeling is that it's got to be the right idea, it's got to be great."

He continued: "I think once we collectively agree what idea that great idea is, we'll be off to the races. Ryan's super-busy, we've got a lot of projects lined up, but we wake up thinking about Deadpool, and we go to sleep thinking about Deadpool."

Much still remains to be seen regarding what fans can hope to expect from the future of the MCU.

Even the film's star Ryan Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly in the past that he wasn't too sure how things were going to pan out after the studio merger.

He said: "I really genuinely don't know a thing about it. I read that [CEO and chairman] Bob Iger felt that there's plenty of room in that universe to have a rated-R character like Deadpool.

"This is completely conjecture on my part, but I wouldn't imagine that Disney bought Fox to dismantle it or something like that. I think that Disney bought Fox so it could have that in its arsenal."

But while this interests fans of the superhero genre, one person who probably couldn't care less what happens with Deadpool et al is Jennifer Aniston.

Earlier this month, the Friends star hit out at Marvel and the rest, claiming the market is over-saturated with comic book flicks.

Speaking to Variety, the 50-year-old said she believes the sheer number of Marvel movies is 'diminishing' the quality that used to be available in cinemas.

Asked why she had chosen to return to TV after having previously focused on films, she said: "It wasn't until the last couple of years when these streaming services were just sort of exploding with this amount of quality that I actually started to think, 'Wow, that's better than what I just did.'

"And then you're seeing what's available out there and it's just diminishing and diminishing in terms of, it's big Marvel movies. Or things that I'm not just asked to do or really that interested in living in a green screen."
