Some think she could even be Madeline McCann

An English-speaking girl found living rough in Rome has sent the Internet into overdrive, with some believing she may even be Madeline McCann.

The blond girl has attracted attention on the streets in Italy, because she can't speak Italian, will only answer in English and refuses to take money, the Daily Mail reports. Italian police have, as yet, been unsuccessful in identifying the girl, because she had no ID.

Since appearing on Missing Person of America people have been linking the girl, who locals call Maria, to a number of missing person cases, including Madeline McCann who disappeared in 2007; a girl called Maria-Brigitte Henslemann who vanished from Germany in 2008; and Amanda Adlai, who was taken in Michigan in 2008.

A post to the site reads: "There have been several people that think it may be Madeline McCann who would be 13 now. Madeline had a distinctive mark on her eye and it would be easy to tell if it was her by that identification."

Other posters think it's unlikely to be McCann - and I have to agree, this girl looks older - because she doesn't seem to have the same distinctive eyes.

Campaigners have now taken to social media to try and get this girl home for Christmas, with some urging the US embassy to get involved, as she doesn't appear to be a Italian national.
