Is This What The Relaunched Nokia 3310 Could Be Like?

Is This What The Relaunched Nokia 3310 Could Be Like?

Hopefully.

There are a lot of things that have gone on to become true staples of nostalgia, though none can really live up to the legacy created by the Nokia 3310.

When times were simpler, polyphonic ringtones ruled and Snake was the best way to pass the time when sitting on the toilet, the famed phone ruled the world. To this day people look back upon it as a mammoth, indestructible, durable phenomenon - a technological feat.

After a tough time, Nokia has finally realised that anything it does in the future will be inferior to the 3310, meaning it's reviving the old handset.

There's not a whole lot of details surrounding the comeback of the phone, but all will be revealed at Mobile World Congress later this month, according to leaker Evan Blass, who first revealed the details.

Hopefully Nokia maintains the original simplicity of the phone, adding in a few more up-to-date necessities we've become accustomed to. To be honest, if they just keep Snake and the ability to create your own ringtones, they're onto a winner.

The second coming of the device will have an Android system, according to GeekBoy, which unfortunately most likely means the battery won't last for days on end, like it did back in 2000.

A video made by YouTube channel Concept Creator imagines how the phone might look after its rebirth. In the video it shows the cult figure in all its original glory, though now with an LED screen and a camera. The likeliness is that it'll have to be a little bigger than what it was 17 years ago, in order to harness the updated technology.

Concept Creator reckons there'll be a built-in FM radio, as well as the ability to create your own ringtone which can be stored 8GB internal memory, all lending itself to the simplicity of the budget phone.

According to Evan Blass it'll set you back roughly £50, but we'll have to wait until February 26 at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona to find out the full details.

The news comes after it was revealed earlier this month that an ex-soldier is still using his original 3310, after it survived tours of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dave Mitchell bought the Nokia 3310 back in 2000 and 17 years later it's still going strong. It's been through the wash and been dropped in a curry and only needs to be charged every 10 days.

Dave even took his phone on two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's been in battle zones. And it's still working.

He said: "It's been through a lot with me. I have dropped it on numerous occasions, on the floor, in curry sauce, and it's been through the washing machine.

"Each time I've just cleaned it up, dried it off, turned it on again and it's worked. It's like it's made of Kryptonite - it's indestructible.

"It's picked up a few scars over the years, but it's still in good working condition. I have a camera if I ever want to take photos, and I don't do selfies.

"I'm perfectly happy with what I've got. Why would I ever change?"

When he left the army after 29 years, he put his phone in a drawer and forgot about it. His family got annoyed at not being able to get in contact with him.

"My days in the army meant that I was good at planning days, so I would work out what I was going to do and stick to the plan.

"There was no need to tell anyone where I was all the time. If I had broken down in the car, I like to think I would have been resourceful enough to sort the situation without needing to call for help.

"It just sat in a draw gathering dust. I didn't really bother me that I didn't have it. I had my landline at home and work if people needed to get in touch."

Dave's son tried to get him an upgrade, but he didn't want it. Not being connected to the Internet makes him feel free and he doesn't want to be the sort of person who is always on his phone. But when he does have a spare moment, he likes to play Snake.

The only downside for Dave is that his daughter calls him up asking for lifts, and he has to pay for data even if he can't use it. Still, he's making a huge saving.
