Tragic Error Made During The Oscars In Memoriam Segment

As well as celebrating the best of cinema at the Oscars, the Academy also pays tribute to the men and women working in the film-industry who passed away over the past year through its In Memoriam segment.

And sadly, as with the announcement of the Best Picture winner, things didn't go to plan on the night.

When the Academy paid tribute to Jan Patterson, an Australian costume designer and four-time Oscar nominee who passed away in October 2016, they mistakenly used a photo of the wrong person.

Leading Australian producer Jan Chapman is reported to be "devastated" that her image was used in error during the show's In Memoriam segment instead of a photo of costume designer Janet Patterson.

Her name and occupation were correctly used in the montage, but the photo was not.

Chapman issued a statement to Variety on the error which said: "I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson. I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered."

She added: "Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up. I am alive and well and an active producer."

This year's In Memoriam also failed to feature several notable celebrities who passed in 2016, including Garry Shandling and Florence Henderson, although they were better known for their television careers.

The Academy has yet to comment on the error.
