Aldi's Kevin the Carrot is undeniably cute, isn't he? The adorable little root vegetable appears on our screens every Christmas and then he's flogged in Aldi stores and causes a mass frenzy.

I promise you, I'm not joking. People queue up outside Aldi stores from 6am in the hopes of getting their hands on one a Kevin plush toy. Typically, they sell out in minutes and then they pop up on eBay within a few hours for hundreds of pounds. Isn't Christmas weird?

In parts of the country there was even reports of the the odd scrap breaking out as shoppers were so keen to purchase a plush Kevin to call their own.

One shopper Matthew Ross, from Skegness, Lincolnshire, queued up from 6.30am in the icy weather to ensure he got himself a full set of the toys. He spent £124 in just a few minutes, but, vitally for Matthew, he managed to grab the Carrots.

He said: "I'm buzzing. The toys are absolutely gorgeous.

"We had been saving up for about four weeks. We normally spend around £70 there for our weekly shop.

"My three boys are so happy. We were queuing since 6.30am with a flask of coffee in hand.

"My boys are early risers anyway, but they soon shot out of bed when we bribed them with a McDonald's breakfast to eat while queuing.

"We bought four sets - one for my wife Amy and one each for the kids. I had to settle for a box of festive bin bags.

"We even managed to get the kids to school on time.

"The staff didn't mention a limit of how many you could buy, but they all did a fantastic job and were great at controlling the crowds and looking out for everyone's safety.

"At the tills we were served with a smile by a very amused staff member."

All profits from the toys, which were first released in 2016, go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The toys have been listed for hundreds on eBay.

But the fact it's a charity item has prompted some shoppers to hit out online, blasting those selling them for hundreds, with one writing: "Absolutely disgusting from all eBay sellers profiting from a charity for children."

An Aldi spokesperson said: "We're sorry that some customers were unable to buy this product. However, demand for these toys has been exceptionally high.

"To avoid any disappointment, this year we increased the range by adding new characters such as Pascal the Parsnip, as well as the amount of soft toys available in each store.

"We also limited purchases to two variants per customer so as many people as possible had the chance to buy these products. As with all our Specialbuys products, these are only available while stocks last."

Last year, the soft toys were listed for hundreds on eBay. One chancer put the full family up for sale for over a grand - although, there's no guarantee they got anything like that.
