Some people's pre-bed rituals are dictated by irrational worries. Every night, they triple-check the back door is locked, leave the radio on in the kitchen to scare off intruders and look under the bed for monsters.

If you are one of these people, and feel as though you are close to getting over these unfounded fears, proceed with caution - this tale may take you right back to square one.

A student at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, USA, got back to her apartment on Saturday to find a bloke hiding in her wardrobe wearing her clothes.

That's right, it's the stuff of nightmares... Not the kind of walk-in wardrobe you're after really.

The student, who wished only to be identified as Maddie, said she and her flatmates had previously joked about there being a ghost in the flat, as her clothes had gone missing on numerous occasions.

Speaking to Fox News, she said: "I just heard rattling in my closet. It sounded like a raccoon in my closet.

"I'm like, 'Who's there?' And somebody answers, 'Me.'

"He's like, 'Oh my name is Drew.' I open the door and he's in there, wearing all of my clothes."

Yeah, I think we're all going to be triple-checking for monsters under the bed tonight.

According to CBS17, she tried to make an emergency call on her Apple Watch but couldn't get it to work, so she talked to him for around 10 minutes while sending pictures of the man to her boyfriend.

The man then left the apartment once her boyfriend arrived.

Police arrived at the Edge apartments at around 3.30pm and took the man into custody, Greensboro police officer Ronald Glenn told BuzzFeed News.

Andrew Clyde Swofford was taken to Guilford County Jail on a $26,600 bond.

Andrew Clyde Swofford, 30, was put in jail on a $26,600 (£20,443) bond and has been charged with breaking and entering, as well as identity theft, larceny, possessing stolen goods, and failing to appear in court in connection with previous cases, BuzzFeed News reports.

Understandably, Maddie has wasted no time getting herself out of the property.

According to CBS17, she said: "We always joke that there's a ghost in here because I've been missing clothes since I've been living here, like shirts - like a shirt at a time or pants at this time. It makes me think he's been here before.

"I'm leaving tonight, yeah, just signed a lease for a new apartment."

Good call, Maddie.
