Paris public transport is free for the second day running as it continues to experience its worst and longest winter pollution in 10 years, according to the Airparif agency.

Authorities have clamped down all drivers except for those with odd-numbered plates. Even-numbered registration plate drivers could face a fine of €35 if they are caught zipping around the arrondissements. More than 1,700 were fined on Tuesday for such activity.

The pollution, which can be seen in pictures of the city's skyline, were criticised by Paris major Anne Hidalgo. By reducing the vehicle emissions, they believe they can sort the problem.

"This is a record period (of pollution) for the last 10 years," Karine Leger of AirParif said.

All vehicles except foreign and emergency ones will be barred.

Michel Cadot, the Paris prefect, had said the ban will be stretched to a third day if necessary, saying: "As long as the meteorological situation remains the same and emissions remain the same, we will not see the end of the pollution spike."
