Firefighters are tackling a blaze in Paris following a powerful explosion that injured at least 20 people, police have confirmed.

Several of those hurt are thought to be firefighters and a total of nine people are said to be seriously injured.

Cars and buildings on Rue de Trévise in the 9th Arrondissement have been destroyed by the blast.

Police have encouraged members of the public to stay away from the area as emergency services attend to the scene.

Police believe the explosion is thought to have been caused by a gas leak in a bakery at around 9am local time.

She wrote: "The police prefecture counts 'many wounded' on Treviso Street, in the 9th, after a violent explosion in a bakery related to a gas leak. The intervention of the BSPP (Paris fire brigade) is in progress."

Police warned residents: "Firefighters are dealing with a fire followed by a big explosion at a business on Treviso Street in the 9th. Avoid the area and allow emergency vehicles to pass through."

Pranav Chittur, who heard the explosion, told the Metro: "The fire woke me up in the morning. My entire bed shook.

"I immediately called my friend as his hotel is on the street where it happened. At first it looked like a fire, but then there was lot of rubble. People were stuck in the rubble as well.

"The impact of the explosion broke a few windows. It was chaotic so we only got a few pictures before we were all cordoned off."

Pictures from the scene show debris cluttering the streets and smoke surrounding buildings with smashed windows.

The Hubert bakery at No 6 Rue de Trévise was not open at the time of the explosion, Le Parisien newspaper reports.

The gas leak had already been reported and fire fighters were on their way when the blast occurred.
