A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for hacking into the accounts of celebrities and stealing nude photos and videos.

Ryan Collins pleaded guilty to illegally accessing the accounts of more than 600 people, including Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson and Kate Upton.

Collins sent phishing emails, which appeared to be from Apple or Google, between 2012 and 2014 in order to get usernames and passwords. He was not charged with releasing the images, the BBC reports.

The gross intrusion of privacy became known as 'the fappening', as dozens of celebrity videos and nude images appeared online.

Speaking at the time, Lawrence told Vanity Fair: "Just because I'm a public figure, just because I'm an actress, does not mean that I asked for this.

"It's my body and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting."

Collins was initially facing up to five years in prison for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, but he accepted a lesser sentence as part of a plea deal for admitting his guilt.
