A US man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his cousin over a disagreement over some salt and vinegar crisps.

Nineteen-year-old Ryan Dean Langdale called cops to report an accidental shooting at his home in Ruffin, South Carolina on 29 September. He told police that his 17-year-old cousin had been cleaning a hunting rifle, when he dropped it and accidentally shot himself.

The teen was rushed into hospital where he was given life-saving surgery and, initially corroborated the story Langdale gave.

However, Major J.W. Champman from the Colleton County Sheriff's Office who was investigating the case says the two stories didn't match up and that the trajectory of the bullet made it 'impossible' that the shot could have been self-inflicted.

He told the Post and Courier: "We knew from the beginning that something wasn't right. The more we looked into it, the more it seemed odd."

A week after undergoing surgery, the teenager woke up and told police that his cousin had shot him after they got into a row over crisps.

According to a police report, Langdale had said: "Do not touch my chips, or I'll shoot you." He then allegedly went into another room and returned with a rifle, which he pointed at his cousin.

The report adds: "The next thing he knew, the rifle went on."

I like crisps as much as the next person, but I can't help but feel this is a bit of an extreme reaction to potentially having a couple nicked.

It's then alleged that Langdale put pressure on his younger cousin to go along with his version of events and tell authorities that it was an accident.

Langdale has also been charged with swapping out the rifle in an attempt to cover up what happened.

Last Wednesday cops searched Langdale's property and found the gun. He later surrendered to police and bail was set at $55,000.

He's since been charged with attempted murder, using a gun in a violent crime and obstructing justice.

For what it's worth, the teenage victim said he didn't even eat any of the crisps.
