On one of Rio de Janeiro's many pristine beaches, a group of naturists have stripped the Olympics spirit right back to basics.

Abrico beach has been a popular nudist beach for more than 20 years. It was recently designated as a clothes-free zone by the Rio government in 2014, reports the Daily Mail.

This year, the 250 square-metre plot is hosting a friendly rendition of the Olympic Games but no team colours - or kit - will be necessary.

The organisers of the Abrico Beach 'Olympic Games' are welcoming anyone who feels brave enough to get their kit off and compete in a series of sporting events.

That's right, the Naked Olympics is a thing. Sports at the event include football, beach volleyball, swimming, sprinting and race walking. As well as replicating Olympic events, there is also surfing and even bloody tug of war (no pun intended).

The Naked Games, which is for dedicated for all naturists, may be a far cry from the main Olympics, but it does take place just nine miles away from the main Olympic venue so there is no reason why Olympians can't get involved in the action.

The officials of the Games advise competitors: "There is no point worrying about 'what you look like when you bend over to pick up the ball, getting embarrassed when you fall over with your legs up in the air or bothering about your bits jiggling as you sprint for the finishing line."

There will be no tickets on sale, though, as gawping is prohibited.
