My childhood dog Dizzy once ate the entirety of my sister's chocolate birthday cake when we left it on the kitchen worktop overnight, so I can speak from personal experience when I say that you should definitely not feed chocolate to dogs. Luckily there were no lasting health effects for my dog for eating the cake, but I had to spend all of the day clearing very sloppy poo off the floor. Not fun.

Anyway, judging from these recent photo of Prince George, our future king has not yet been made aware of this rule.

A new photo, taken to celebrate him reaching the ripe old age of three, shows the prince feeding ice-cream to the royal's family dog Lupo.

But animal welfare organizations have expressed concerns that the treat that may contain dairy items, which are tough on dog's digestive tracts, as well as chocolate, which is highly toxic to them.

An RSPCA spokesperson said in a statement: "It is lovely that Prince George is trying to help keep his family dog, Lupo, cool in these high temperatures.

"We would advise people to be cautious when giving their dogs food meant for human consumption as some items, like chocolate, can be highly toxic to dogs and dairy items can be difficult for them to digest.

"Instead of ice-cream we would suggest making an ice lolly from pet-friendly ingredients. Making these can be really fun for children and the end product is both safe and enjoyable for dogs."
