A 17-year-old boy presumed dead woke up on the way to his funeral, it has been reported.

School dropout turned construction labourer Kumar Marewad is now in critical condition at a private hospital.

News Minute reports that Marewad, who lives in Managundi village in Karnataka's Dharwad district, was bitten by a stray dog last month and was struck by a severe fever.

Marewad was soon taken to a hospital and put on ventilator support where doctors informed his family that an infection had spread in his body and that he wouldn't have much chance of pulling through.

Brother-in-law Sharanappa Naikar told the Times of India: "We had decided to take Kumar home after doctors told us his chances of survival were bleak once taken off the ventilator."

When the family noticed "no body movement" after bringing Marewad home, they assumed he had died and started planning his funeral.

As they carried his body away to perform last rites, just two kilometers from the family house, Marewad opened his eyes and started moving his arms and legs.

Dr Mahesh Neelakhantannavar later told TOI that Marewad is now back on ventilation and that he is suffering from meningoencephalitis because of the dog bite.
