Instagram Model Shows The Effects Periods Have On Women

Very honest and brave.

Recently a lot of people have come forward to try and break the stereotypical perceptions social media has imposed on our lives.

Sites like Facebook and Instagram have shown life through a singular lens, leading people to feel like their lives are inadequate because maybe they aren't as slim, or they aren't having a good a time as they should be. However, people like Anna Victoria and Malin Olofsson, two Instagram models, have shown images to demonstrate how pictures posted online might not be what they seem.

This picture of Anna shows how different angles can give a entirely different impression of belly flab...

In similar fashion Malin Olofsson has taken to the image sharing site to show the effects of something she, and all woman, can't avoid.

Periods is usually a topic swerved by men, in any sense. Going to the shop to pick up tampons is pretty much out of the question, seeing an advert for them is seen as revolting, and menstruation can often be the butt of a joke.

"You think a periods hard? Try conceding a 90th minute winner on FIFA," or "Mardy arse, you on your period?," is the type of typical joke that gets made a lot of the time.

The fitness model is trying to breaking that taboo, showing the effects 'that time of the month' can have.

Alongside the picture she wrote: "Some of you have seen this before. Some of you haven't. Some of you experience and go through this yourself once a month. Some of you will be disgusted. Some of you will sigh with relief and think: 'Omg I'm not alone'. Some of you will not read this caption and presume that I'm pregnant.

"This is the visual signs of PMS for me and many other women. For some it's less extreme, for some it's more. Water retention is a very normal and common symptom of PMS. Some women will hardly notice it and some go through immense discomfort for a couple of days a month. It can start anytime between ovulation and your period.

"THIS IS NORMAL. This is nothing to be ashamed of."

For reference of the difference it causes, Malin has many pictures that she uploads daily, like this one:

"Yes - it is very uncomfortable, and yes - it is really difficult to not feel like you must hide it and try to suck your stomach in," she continued on the post. "I've stopped. I've decided that breathing is more important than what other people may or might think.

"I've decided that my body's reaction to the hormonal change is not going to be an aspect that I let contribute to my already unstable mental state. Because when I have PMS, I already feel like dying. And I've decided to love my body no matter how I feel about life."

Malin has overcome the perils of anorexia in the past, saying that she "used to hate my body and all I saw was my perception of my 'flawed appearance'".

However, she now campaigns for body positivism, freeing herself from the ill thoughts towards herself and opposing against the number of filtered, edited and fake pictures that give people a false sense of insecurity.

"Now I see a body. A strong, healthy, capable body," she wrote. "I see the work that I've put into my body in the sense of actually caring and giving my body as it has given me life.

"I see courage, mental strenght, assertiveness and passion.

"I see me."
