In 2008, 71-year-old Edward Crook was admitted to hospital because his top lip was sore. The pain became bigger, and was eventually found to be cancerous. He now lives with a hole in his face, and has spoken about living with the disfigurement.
The pensioner was told he'd be in Manchester Royal Infirmary for a maximum of 10 days to sort his problem, but unfortunately he woke up from a coma two-and-a-half-months later with a hole in the middle of his face.
The operation he underwent, which saw the removal of his nose, was 'life saving' according to doctors, but came with complications, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Crook, who has now been left housebound because of the surgery, and suffers cruel comments if he goes out, told MEN that he was told two square inches of his shoulder would be removed to reconstruct what was taken. Now, with a chunk of not only his face, but also his shoulder missing, he says that he still hasn't been told why any of it necessary.
"I can't do anything, they cut me to pieces," the Bolton resident said. "I hadn't a clue what was going to happen. If I had known this would happen I would never have agreed to it."
After not being able to take part in hobbies such as fishing and darts, the pensioner called upon a lawyer to help him take the hospital to court, but after three years they told him he didn't have a case.
According to doctors at Manchester Royal Infirmary, he was offered surgery to repair his face, but he refused it, asking for any other procedures to be done somewhere else.

A spokesperson for the hospital said: "Unfortunately a complication precluded the planned reconstructive surgery.
"Mr Crook did not take up our follow-up offer of reconstructive surgery at the time.
"We continue to offer treatment and support and the offer of reconstructive surgery remains open."

Let's hope something can be done for the 71-year-old, and he can get out of the house and back to enjoying a spot of fishing.
