Kurt Angle Discusses His Outrageous Painkiller Addiction Struggle

An awful long time has passed since Kurt Angle last stepped foot in a WWE ring, having been plying his trade in TNA, where he has done for the last ten years.

The gold medal winning Olympian enjoyed a brilliant run in the WWE, and at the time he quit the company, claimed to be the highest paid superstar on the roster.

However, as with most professional wrestlers, injuries came thick and fast for Angle. His reason for leaving WWE was due to him not being able to get the time off while injured, meaning he had to wrestle while in pain.

Following breaking his neck four times, the 47-year-old was obviously on meds. He became addicted to a lot of painkillers, but when it came to Vicodin, an extra-strength painkiller, the man was like Keith Moon, Mick Jagger and Steve-O rolled into one.

Speaking on the Dan Le Batard Show, Angle went into great depth to describe the height of his addiction, revealing that he used to take 65 Vicodin pills per day. Fucking hell, I'd struggle to have 65 Skittles.

"The thing is, everybody drank down there [in TNA]," Angle said on the show. "So I started drinking with my meds. And then I started manipulating my meds.

"I would save all of them until the evening, and drink it with alcohol. And it got me in a lot of trouble - four DUIs in five years."

Eventually, 'The Wrestling Machine' checked into rehab in 2013, ending his struggle with addiction. Before that, though, it was really fucking tough for him.

"I think it has to do with that I don't ever want to have that feeling again," Angle said. "I was merciless to that drug. I was doing stupid stuff. I was desperate.

"I was spending a lot of money for the medication. It took control of my life. I didn't have anything else to think about than how I was gonna get that drug the next time I could get it. It was ruining my life.

"The worst time of my whole entire life was those three years where I was really, really deep into it."

Luckily, Angle is now on the straight and narrow, boasting three years of sobriety.

Time for a return to the WWE? Yes fucking please.
