More details have emerged of the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab, who died while riding a waterslide in Kansas City.

Caleb, the son of Kansas State lawmaker Scott, died on the Verrückt ride at the Schlitterbahn Water Park after being decapitated on the way down from the 169ft slide.

Esteban Castaneda, a witness at the waterpark, told ABC 7 he heard loud booms before seeing a body wash down after the raft.

As he ran forward to help, he saw a lifeguard holding people back and caught a glimpse of the young boy who appeared to have been decapitated.

Another witness claimed Caleb flew out of the raft after the first drop and hit the safety net before dropping 50ft to his death.

The two women on the raft were both bleeding, suffering from a broken jaw and a broken face bone.

Kansas City Police confirmed Caleb had died from a 'fatal neck injury at the end of the ride'.

There was blood all over the slide and needed tarpaulin draped over it to cover the distressing scenes. Caleb's body was covered with a sheet.

Castaneda's wife Leslie told The Kansas City Star: "I saw his (Caleb's) brother. He was screaming. I'm really having a tough time with it. I really am."

Various unconfirmed sources are claiming there was not enough weight on the raft for those three people to have gone down together. Another source said the Velcro on the raft was not working the morning the incident took place.

The ride itself has been closed pending an investigation.

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of young Caleb.
