Why Are Companies Dropping Certain Letters From Their Names?

It's all for a really good cause.

You may have noticed that certain companies are dropping letters out of their names, but why?

Well, it's all down to a new campaign to get more people donating blood. The joint venture was launched by NHS Blood and Transplant and a PR agency called Engine Group.

The letters A, B and O have been dropped from massive names like Google, Microsoft and even Xbox for the next week to raise awareness.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is reportedly hoping to attract 200,000 new volunteers. It released statistics that showed there are 40 percent fewer new blood donors now compared to a decade ago.

The campaign will run until August 21 and companies from 21 countries are taking part.

You may find all of this familiar. The NHS did launch something similar a while back - but this is the first time it's had worldwide participation.

The Assistant Director for Donor Services and Marketing at NHSBT, Jon Latham, told Huffington Post: "We simply can't ignore the fact that there has been a stark reduction in the number of new donors coming forward - a trend seen across the world.

"We know that people's lives have got busier over the last decade. People are working longer hours, commuting further, spending more time online and have less time of their own, despite more options of how to use it. Good causes are also competing increasingly for people's attention and time.

"Travel to more exotic places, tattoos and investigations such as endoscopy are becoming more common and these lead to short term deferrals from donation. These are just some of the reasons why we've seen a decline in new people starting to donate."
