Hugh Jackman Talks About His Don't-Try-This-At-Home Diet For 'Logan'

Hugh Jackman is what we'd call, without question, a monster.

On and off set, the Australian actor proves himself time and time again. If you'e gonna spend the best part of two decades playing a Marvel superhero then spending three-quarters of your life in the gym is essential.

That, and keeping to a strict diet regime.

Loads of meat, loads of eggs, loads of stuff, is what you envision Jackman putting away in order to prep for his role as Wolverine.

Well, in new film Logan, things were a lot different. Dangerously different, what's more.

Esquire reported that Jackman underwent a dehydration regime prior to shoots to achieve that gaunt-but-ripped look.

Jackman revealed to Stephen Colbert that he upped his water intake to around three gallons per day leading up to filming, only to cut out all drinking 36 hours before cameras would roll, on which he'd appear topless.

"You lose like 10 pounds of water weight," Jackman said. He added: "Don't do this at home."

It takes around 100 hours, depending on temperature, to die from dehydration.

Probably for the best that we all steer clear of coasting near that for the sake of authenticity. This is why CGI was invented. Not for science fiction films, but so that Hugh Jackman didn't have to put his body on the line for a haggard-ripped body in Logan.

It's the not the first time the action star has channelled the no-liquid diet for a role. He did a similar routine when portraying the paroled prisoner Jean Valjean in Les Misérables.

"I'd already shed 20 pounds, through exercise and a very lean diet, before I embarked on that 36-hour period in which I drank nothing and ate very little and I knew I was pushing myself and my body to the limit," he told MailOnline at the time.

"But the non-consumption of liquids is a very clever bodybuilders' trick for giving one sunken cheeks and sunken eyes and, boy, did it work. Maybe just a little too well..."

Last month, Jackman revealed he had beaten cancer for the sixth time in a typically relaxed, Aussie fashion.

Posting a video to Instagram, he wrote "Thank you São Paulo, thank you Brazil. Happy Carnival! Health!"

At the premiere of Logan at the Berlin Film Festival in February, he said: "It is fine, it is all done, all fixed, all out. Thank you for asking."

He recently had his sixth skin cancer removed and warned fans of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure.

With a bandage over his nose, the 48-year-old Wolverine actor posted to Twitter and Instagram to reveal that he was undergoing treatment for basal cell carcinoma, once again.

The Hollywood star posted a photo of himself showing a plaster across his nose.

He captioned the photo: "Another basal cell carcinoma. Thanks to frequent body checks and amazing doctors, all is well. Looks worse with dressing on than off. I swear!"

He first received treatment for basal cell carcinoma back in 2013.

Last year, he posted similar image with him a bandage over his nose to his Facebook page.

Basal cell carcinoma, also known as a BCC, is a type of skin cancer largely believed to be caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or sun beds.

It's the single most common form of skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, with approximately three million cases diagnosed in the USA each year.

While it almost never spreads beyond the lesion site, it can be disfiguring if allowed to grow.

Jackman first had a cancer removed in 2013 after having a mole checked under the advice of his wife Deborra-Lee Furness.

He wrote at the time: "Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a basil cell carcinoma. Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"

Speaking to People in 2015, Jackman said growing up in Australia made him a 'prime candidate' for skin cancer, admitting he never wore sunscreen.

He said: "I go every three months for check-ups. It's the new normal for me. My doctor says I'll likely have more, and if that's your cross to bear in life, you should be so lucky."
