There's Going To Be A Supermoon And Meteor Shower At The Same Time

Sounds exciting.

Is it just me, or is the idea of a 'supermoon' really new? I feel like it came out of nowhere and now all people do is bang on about it.

Last month, people got 'supermoon' fever. The Moon reached its closest point to Earth since January 1948 and people lost their shit. Some people had 'supermoon' parties and there were so many Tweets and Facebook statuses, I lost count. However, when it finally happened it was, well, crap.

People took to sticking tortillas on their windows in a playful bit of played-out banter.

But hold your horses, sunshine. Put down that packet of tortillas and listen up. This next rare event actually sounds pretty cool. There's going to be another 'supermoon' and a kick-ass meteor shower both happening simultaneously in the UK.

Before you say it, yes. Generally a big, bright moon isn't great for spotting meteor showers as the extra light can dim the impact of the meteors. However, this isn't your average meteor shower.

It's known as the Geminid meteor shower, and it's special because they are extra bright and leave 'long persistent trails' in the sky reports ScienceAlert.

A NASA meteor expert spoke to Space.com about the event: "It's usually the best meteor shower of the year."

Usually, you'd expect to see 120 meteors an hour, but because of the fuck-off massive moon you'll more likely see 40. It's a small price to pay for what I imagine will be absolutely stunning pictures the day after. Although we'll probably see bugger all because England's cloudy.

The event will be happening on the night of December 13.
