Although Venom wasn't received as well as expected, it smashed it at the box office, and creators have confirmed that Tom Hardy will get a slice of that pie as he returns for Venom 2 to play Eddie Brock.

Speaking to Fandango, Sony producer Amy Pascal was asked about the future of the Venom franchise.

Although she didn't give much away, but she did confirm that the English actor will be back.

She said: "I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can."

Venom, which is part of the Sony Marvel Universe rather than the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), follows journalist Eddie Brock, who gains super powers after getting bound to a parasitic alien symbiote.

The character of Venom was originally created as a nemesis for Spider-Man, having been first introduced as a character in a 1984 issue of the comic The Amazing Spider-Man.

The last time we properly saw the two together in action and sharing the same screen was in 2007, in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, where the character was played by Topher Grace - although there was a brief Venom cameo in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I know, it's confusing.

Sony

So basically, Venom is part of the Sony Cinematic Universe and while it might not share in the MCU, Sony says the movie is in the same universe as the most recent Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. This sparked hope in the past that there would be a crossover - which this week seemed to be closer than ever.

The news came from the horse's mouth, or the one of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He revealed in a recent interview that it was likely to happen.

Of course, last year saw the release of a standalone Venom film (imaginatively titled Venom) with Tom Hardy in the titular role - giving him a new origin story that wiped out any reason for him to be Spider-Man's nemesis.

However, now it seems Marvel wants to bring the two back together.

When asked about a potential crossover by CinemaBlend, Feige said: "I think probably it's up to Sony."

He continued: "Sony has both those characters and has Venom in their world. I don't know what their plans are for another Venom or if they're doing that.

"But it seems likely at some point."

So there we have it - we may be seeing more of Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock after Venom 2.
