Jay and Silent Bob director Kevin Smith has said he would love to see Tom Cruise join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, predicting that if he were brought in as Wolverine he'd pull in a 'billion dollars'.

Speaking to Marc Bernardin on the Fatman Beyond show, Smith said: "I look forward to them bringing him [Cruise] into the comic book world. Like, I think he's ripe for a Marvel takeover."

This prompted Bernardin to mention the hugely successful Mission: Impossible movies, which are due to get two more sequels in 2021 and 2022.

But Smith was adamant that Cruise's next move should be into the MCU.

He continued: "He's got this franchise, which is huge for him but, like, you're not getting any younger and it's, you know, those movies they can add life to a mother fucker's career.

"Could you imagine if they made him a bad guy in a movie? He'd be so fucking good. I'm still a Tom Cruise buyer. I'd buy that product."

Bernardin suggested that Cruise might make a good Striker for any future reboot of the X-Men. However, Smith responded: "No, fuck that. Make him Wolverine."

Adding: "Tom Cruise's Wolverine makes a billion dollars."

He then went off naming other roles he reckons Cruise would ace, including Professor X and Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards, before going full circle back to Wolverine.

Sadly, for Smith, he's not in control of casting over at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so we may never see just how good a Wolverine Cruise could play.

It's probably for the best anyway, seeing as Smith is set to have his hands full with the new Jay and Silent Bob reboot.

Smith shared a photo of him and producer Jordan Monsant on 2 January, in which he said the film was in 'pre-pre-production'.

Of course, there's no Silent Bob without pal Jay, so fans will be pleased to know that Jason Mewes (Jay) is on-board for the new flick.

There are few details about the plot just yet but, according to a synopsis on IMDB, the movie will centre on 'Jay and Silent Bob return to Hollywood to stop a reboot of 'Bluntman and Chronic' movie from getting made'.

Speaking about the script to comicbook.com in 2017, Mewes said: "I've read the script, and it's amazing and it's super clever.

"It's called Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, and it's Jay and Bob making fun of reboots. It's funny - a couple of people have asked me, 'are you guys even playing the characters if it's a reboot?' It's not really a reboot, Kevin called it Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and it's us making fun of reboots, but the script's awesome. It's very funny."
