Ned Stark Has Just Shut Down All Your Rumours About His Death

Ned Stark Has Just Shut Down All Your Rumours About His Death

There was plenty of speculation to what he was REALLY saying, but unfortunately there's only one truth

Ned Stark's death in Game of Thrones was rough because it was the first major character (that we liked) to be killed off from the HBO show.

But there was one aspect of that scene that sent conspiracy theorists typing on their blogs quicker than you can say 'Jon Snow's a bastard'.

There was a lot of drama leading up to the big chop, with Sansa (Sophie Turner) screaming about her dad's oncoming murder and Ayra (Masie Williams) similarly heartbroken, but she was forced to keep quiet.

The music dramatically drops and all we can hear is Ned Stark (Sean Bean) whispering something before the mother of all swords comes down in one fell swoop.

But what was with all that whispering?

Some people believed he muttered 'valar morghulis' - which means 'all men must die' - and that this foreshadowed what could happen in season eight: everyone losing to the Night King and his army of White Walkers.

Then there were other theorists who believed Ned whispered 'I kept my promise', alluding to him raising the bastard produced by Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, aka Jon Snow.

An even more left-of-centre idea was that he was merely talking to himself, knowing that Bran was the Three-Eyed Raven and had greensight, meaning he could return to this very scene later on and get priceless wisdom.

All were good concepts, but Sean Bean says we were all trying way too hard to find something out of nothing.

He told Huffington Post the game-changing thing he was whispering was... 'The Oath'.

"I couldn't be too specific, because I don't know if religion [like that] was around in those days, whatever they were.

"I just thought 'What would you do if this were really gonna happen?' You probably would pray. You probably would murmur some words and you'd keep it quiet. You'd keep it to yourself."

"It's quite subtle in that many people wouldn't pick it up. It was an interesting thing to do for me at that point.

"There's not much you can do really, you've got your head on a block. That's about the only thing you can do is murmur."

Well, that was broadly underwhelming.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice thought, but us Game of Thrones fans like to believe that there are hidden messages everywhere and this just doesn't live up to the hype. How about we forget this little revelation and wait for Ned's premonition to save the day in the final season?
